If you feel you're not making enough progress when writing software compared to others, just look at the commit history on GitHub for their projects. You'll see their software evolved to become great. It happened over many months and many of the same issues had to be resolved as you've been dealing with. There's a lot of hard work involved in writing software that is not visible on the surface.
